ACMA Public Policy Committee Update
The changes brought on by the Affordable Care Act (ACA) signed in March of 2010 have had the largest impact on Americans in the history of federal health policy. The most substantial changes will occur on January 1, 2014, when one of the most debated and controversial open-access markets for subsidized coverage for health care will begin.

With the opening of the health insurance marketplaces, formerly called insurance exchanges, on October 1, 2014, healthcare in America is once again in the spotlight. As we as case managers try to figure out what the impact is for us and the health care systems that we work for, 12 million Americans will be looking to the Marketplaces to see what it means for them as well. Not since Medicare was signed into law in 1965 has there been such an expansion in health care coverage. - read more...

Revised Standards of Practice and Scope of Services Brochure Available Online

Monday ACMA announced the release of the new Standards of Practice and Scope of Services for Health Care Delivery System Case Management and Transitions of Care (TOC) Professionals. These standards create the foundation for the practice of health care delivery system case management and address the key tenets of the practice. The new Standards of Practice and Scope of Services are designed to address recent developments in health care and ensure practitioners are well-positioned to respond to those changes yet-to-come.

Members will soon receive a printed copy of the brochure in the mail. Additional copies are available for purchase and can be ordered online. To view the revised Standards of Practice and Scope of Services, go to www.acmaweb.org/standards.

Register Now for the 2013 Leadership Conference

Transitions between care settings is not a new concept for case management professionals. Case managers understand that a safe, efficient transition can make all the difference for a patient. However, with increased scrutiny and penalties for excessive readmissions, organizations nationwide are reevaluating existing models and implementing innovative programs to help ensure patients transition safely and remain out of the hospital.

A two-day intensive workshop November 6-7 in Las Vegas, the 2013 ACMA Leadership Conference is focused specifically on Transitions of Care. The event's experienced faculty consists of industry experts and health care leaders who will discuss community partnerships, provide tools, and present examples and successful models that can be replicated and incorporated into your current practice.

The conference is designed for hospital/health system case management professionals in leadership positions. The conference is a two-day intensive workshop focused on transitions of care. Sessions will focus on a variety of issues affecting case management leaders, including:
  • Building new community relationships
  • Addressing health insurance exchanges
  • Helping patients grasp transitions of care
  • Maintaining the integrity and distinction of the role of case managers
To register, go to www.acmaweb.org/leadership.
