FOX News reports on Observation and the 3-Day Requirement for SNF Coverage
FOX News is the most recent news outlet to report on CMS's 3-day inpatient stay requirement for skilled nursing facility (SNF) coverage and the adverse effect it has on many Medicare beneficiaries. During the news segment, representatives from the Center for Medicare Advocacy and the American Hospital Association explained how the requirement is a costly problem for patients and for hospitals, which are bound by other CMS regulations that dictate when it is appropriate to treat patients as inpatients or as outpatients. The segment also mentioned legislation sponsored by Rep. Joe Courtney, D-Conn., and supported by ACMA, to amend the current 3-day requirement to include any 3-day stay regardless of the patient's status - read more...

"Since You Asked" Committee Update

What does it take to be compliant under the new discharge planning rules?

On May 17, 2013, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) released the new Conditions of Participation for Discharge Planning. There are thirteen essential elements to the new release and all of them affect our daily work. The emphasis is on screening and assessment, planning, documentation, and readmission evaluation. The Scope of Services and the Standards of Practice released by ACMA in 2013 address the same items and mirror the same professional conduct when interacting with our patients and their families. We encourage you to take a moment to review the requirements, understand them and use them in your daily practice. For a complete explanation of the essential elements, CMS has published a PDF to view - read more...
