Congress Asks HHS to Reform RACs
More than 100 members of the U.S. House of Representatives signed a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to urge the immediate reform of the Medicare Recovery Audit Contractor (RAC) process. The letter stresses the need to improve the auditors' accuracy in identifying coding and medical documentation errors. The letter also suggests that the RAC payment model be altered so that RACs no longer receive a commission on denied claims because the incentive encourages RACs to deny claims even if the claims are correct. By denying even the correct claims, RACs are also penalizing Medicare beneficiaries, the letter states, because the beneficiaries then incur higher out-of-pocket expenses after a claim is denied - read more...

CMS Updates Hospital Inpatient Admission Order and Certification Guidance
 
On Jan. 30 the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released new guidelines regarding hospital inpatient admission orders and certification in an effort to better clarify issues pertaining to the FY 2014 IPPS/LTCH final rule.
