The Journey to 3,000 Accredited Case Managers:
An Interview with the Milestone ACM

The ACM credential is meaningful to those who hold it for a variety of reasons. ACMA has been collecting and sharing stories from both individuals and organizations regarding their perspective of ACM certification and its value to case managers' daily practice and career advancement. As ACMA recently exceeded 3,000 ACM certified professionals, we interviewed Ashley Alderman, nurse case manager at LewisGale Hospital Montgomery in Blacksburg, Virginia, to find out what she thought about being the 3,000th Accredited Case Manager.

ACMA: Why did you choose the ACM as your case management certification?
Ashley: I have been a nurse for over 12 years. I have been in hospital case management for the last three years. I chose the ACM for my certification because it is geared toward hospital case management.

ACMA: What opportunities have become available to you because you obtained your ACM?
Ashley: Certification is a "big deal" at LewisGale Hospital Montgomery. We are a Magnet facility and our nursing staff feels like certified nurses make for better nursing care. Earning certification is not only a personal achievement, but is also one that is encouraged by my hospital administration.

ACMA: What was your perception of the exam prior to taking it?
Ashley: Prior to taking the exam I had anxiety. I was unable to find a definitive study course for the exam, and had to rely on my experience to take the certification.

ACMA: What do you think of the exam now?
Ashley: I feel like the exam was a perfect reflection of what a case manager should know for their job.

ACMA: Would you recommend ACM certification?
Ashley: I would hands down recommend the ACM certification. It was easy to register for the exam, the testing locations were convenient, and the testing center made for a comfortable environment.

ACMA: What is the significance to you of being the 3000th ACM certified professional?
Ashley: Being the 3,000th Accredited Case Manager is a privilege for me. I am humbled to be able to share my nursing journey and encourage others to push themselves and become certified!
